Its Red Ribbon Week at West Monroe High School!!!!

Red Ribbon Week pays special tribute to DEA Special Agent Enriqué “Kiki” Camarena, an 11-year veteran of the DEA assigned to the Guadalajara, Mexico office where he closely trailed the country’s most dangerous marijuana and cocaine traffickers. In 1985, he was kidnapped, brutally tortured and murdered by Mexican drug traffickers. His tragic death caused many Americans to deeply consider the dangers of drugs.

Shortly after Kikis death, Congressman Duncan Hunter along with a close friend of Kikis launched a local program in which people gathered in Kikis hometown and pledged to lead drug-free lives to honor Kikis commitment to the cause.

What started as a small club soon became a widespread initiative.

Today, more than 80 million people across the country participate in Red Ribbon events each year. The campaign allows communities to stand together against substance abuse.

This years national theme is “Your Future is Key, So Stay Drug Free”.

To celebrate Red Ribbon Week we will have a candy count contest in the library. Stop by Monday-Friday (before school or during lunch) to submit your guess for a chance to win a Tinsel Town gift card.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 24 we are going to “SOCK IT” to drugs! Students wear your crazy socks!! Also, stop by the library during lunch to receive a red wristband.

*Thursday, October 26 wear RED to school and come to the library during lunch to watch a movie and receive special prizes!
