Students, this is the last week to sign up for drivers ed! There are only 6 spots left so don’t delay! You can sign up online at gorebs.org or with coach Osborne between 1-4 periods in the PE gym.

Congratulations to the Air Force Junior ROTC cadets who went to the state competition for drill and ceremonies this last weekend and squared off against teams from across the state. Cadet Hunter Paul led the Physical Training Team to third overall and personally had the highest pushups of all cadets at the competition.  West Monroe's team also turned in the fastest team run time of the day. Cadets Cody Daniel and Dale Martin came away with a third place finish in Tandem exhibition drill. Cadet Cayla Deer led the Unarmed Inspection team to second place. Cadet Damion Green led the Armed Regulation drill team to second place. Cadet Hunter Paul finished first place out of over 300 cadets from across the state in the individual drill down competition. Overall West Monroe finished in third place behind Benton and Cabot.

In other ROTC news The Stellar Explorer team led by Cadet Cayla Deer competing in the National High School Space Competition qualified for the semi-finals for the third year in a row.  If they are successful in the semis they will advance to the nationals in Colorado Springs later this spring.

Some French club members just returned from a weekend of French immersion in Lafayette. At French convention Chloe Whitlock finished her term as the state treasurer and placed 3rd in music. Reagan Power won a scholarship to study in Brussels this summer! Students had a great time learning about Cajun culture, including occupations, cuisine, music, and dance. They had the opportunity to hear the band Feufollet. The excursion ended with a trip to a French bakery. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Congratulations are in order for senior, Wes Taylor.  Wes is the recipient of The Brockman Scholarship.  This merit-based, full-ride academic scholarship covers five years of study exclusively at the College Station campus of Texas A&M University. The scholarship supports four years of undergraduate study in designated areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as well as a one-year Master of Science inBusiness graduate program for non-business majors at Texas A&M’s Mays Business School. Students who are offered a scholarship commit to enrolling in, and successfully completing, both degree programs.  A total of 50 scholarships are awarded every year and our very own Wes Taylor made the list.  The requirements were quite competitive.  Applicants had to score a 32 or higher on the ACT.  They also had to demonstrate excellence in academics, leadership and constructive social engagement.  Wes was actually flown to Houston for a personal interview and he clearly nailed it.  We are so proud of you, Wesley Walker Taylor.  We can't wait to see how you impact the world of Computer Science. Students - It's important to know that Wes discovered this scholarship opportunity by taking advantage of a college visit.  The Brockman Foundation had a table set up and he made a fateful decision to stop and see what they were all about.  Remember it's never to early to start planning for college.  Explore. Plan. Apply.

Students in grades 10 - 12 with last names A - D, this is a very important message.  Mrs. McCollough will be on temporary leave and caring for her mother.  She will still be able to address nearly every one of your requests; you will simply need to send her an Email.  You can reach her at nancymccollough@opsb.net.  You can pick up a slip of paper with this information in the guidance office.  You can also find her Email address at gorebs.org.  Just select the parent/student tab and then choose guidance.  Counselors are your first option.  You must select her name for the Email address to display.  If there is an emergency, please see Beth Fuller in the clinic or your administrator, Mr. Lewis.  She really appreciates your support on this, so be sure to Email her.   Do not fill out the typical request form in guidance.

Seniors - Are you going to LA Tech and plan to major in Accounting or Engineering?  If so, there is a scholarship now available in guidance that may be a perfect fit for you.  It's worth $1,500 a year.  Scholarship applicants must be admitted to Tech for the fall of 2020.  You must be a person of integrity and high moral character an you need at least a 3.0 GPA. Let's represent, Rebels.

Students, tonight the Rebel Basketball Team will take on the Wossman Wildcats here in the New Gym at 7:00 so come out and support your Rebels!

Rebel family, please come support the Lady Rebel Basketball team this Thursday  at 5:30 as we take on Northshore for the first round playoff game. The Lady Rebels have been selected as the #8 seed in the state and  we need your support to cheer us on as we start the journey to winning a State Championship! Admission will be $7. Sport season passes will not be valid during playoffs. We hope to see you Thursday!

Go Rebs!
